Why We Need the Middle Years

Students in the Middle Years have different needs and aspirations from students in the primary and senior years which are often not satisfied by traditional approaches to teaching and learning.

The adolescent years of schooling are crucial. Research has shown that students in the Middle Years need a targeted approach to meet their developmental needs so that they remain interested in learning and stay at school.

Middle Years will make school more interesting for students. It will give students more opportunities to learn about topics that they are interested in and develop skills that they can use in later life. It will also make it easier and less overwhelming for students moving from primary school to secondary school.

In the Middle Years, students will generally have two or three main teachers during the day working as a team. They will also have access to specialist teachers who will teach particular subjects. Students will be able to develop better relationships with teachers than at a traditional high school where they would be taught by many different teachers.

Many teachers already use the Middle Years approach to teach students and they have found it successful. Middle Years will be introduced into government schools so all students across the Territory will have the opportunity to benefit from this approach.

As families become more mobile, a common point of entry into secondary school across the Territory will ensure that students have the smoothest possible transition from one school to another.
