Enrolment for students across the Territory
29 August 2006
The Department of Employment, Education and Training (DET) Executive Director Schools John Glasby said schools will cater initially to students living in their local priority enrolment area.
“Schools will consider enrolments from students living in other areas if there is capacity for additional students after local students have been catered for,” he said.
All out-of-area enrolment applications will be assessed equally on a series of selection criteria set by the school.
“This criteria may include whether the student has a sibling attending the school, whether the student is keen to complete a particular specialist program offered by the school, and/or whether the individual year level and subject area has the capacity,” Mr Glasby said.
Mr Glasby said that parents of students who have had their applications declined can have the decision reviewed by DET General Managers of Schools.
“With the quality and choice of schools across the Territory – each with individual programs and specialised services – there is significant movement of students across enrolment areas, particularly in the Darwin, Palmerston and rural area. In other words, many of our students are enrolled in schools not in their local residential area,” he said. “We expect this significant movement pattern to continue.”
Schools will hold information nights for specific year levels and open days for prospective parents and students. Families are invited to attend these events to discuss options and student enrolment with teachers and principal.
