Students ready for Senior Years
29 August 2006
Schools have been working together to ensure that students throughout the Territory will be well placed to make a smooth transition to middle/senior schools next year.
Nightcliff High School, which will become a middle school next year, has been proactive in working collaboratively with both feeder primary schools and Darwin High School.
Following orientation sessions, some of Nightcliff’s Year 11 students have already transferred to Darwin High School.
Staff at Casuarina Senior College (CSC) have been working with their colleagues at Dripstone High School to develop a familiarisation and orientation program for incoming students.
Employment, Education and Training Chief Executive Margaret Banks said staff from CSC visited Year 11 students at Dripstone just this week.
“Plans have been made for small groups of students from Years 9, 10 and 11 to visit CSC throughout terms 3 and 4 for orientation activities – and senior Dripstone students will be involved in the subject selection process at CSC later in the year.”
Ms Banks said DET is also determined to ensure that students enrolled in special programs have a smooth passage to their new learning environments next year.
“There is a strong focus on students with special needs, students participating in the Futures and Pathway programs, Indigenous students and students enrolled in the extensive VET and work ready programs.”
Planning is also taking place between high schools and primary schools with high school orientation of current Year 7 students in terms 3 and 4.
Ms Banks the schools are to be commended for implementing programs that will support students in this transition process.
Parents who would like to know more about their child’s transition into the Middle Years or Senior Years are encouraged to contact their local school principal.
